5 Interesting foods that may improve your sex drive

After busting the myth that chocolate is an aphrodisiac we did a little research on some foods that may actually affect your sex drive.

We’ve all heard about certain food, drinks and behaviour having a reputation to improve your sex drive, make you feel horny or improve your performance. And quite frankly, after disappointingly busting the chocolate myth (sorry guys!) we dug into a few more foods on the “Aphrodisiac” list!

But hey, before your body gets riddled with excitement (we know you’re keen on improving your sex drive, cause, who isn’t?) let’s just put it out there – from a historical and scientific stand point, the alleged results from certain foods and drinks may have been mainly due to mere belief by their users… Also known as the placebo effect.

Perhaps some of them remain myths and are not worth the try but this top 5 potentially aphrodisiac food list may be worth your while for their other health benefits!

Maca

This Peruvian herb has a reputation to boost libido. According to folk belief, Maca is known for its legendary ability to deliver energy and mental clarity and enhance sex drive. Surprise, surprise, there are only a few randomized control studies showing some benefit. Some studies suggest it may improve semen quality, relieve symptoms of menopause, and reduce enlarged prostates. Georgetown University Medical Center professor Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, says, “The strongest evidence is that it may increase sperm count and improve fertility in certain men.” So if you’re family planning, taking Maca could be your natural fertility booster!

Shilajit

We bet you haven’t heard of this one before… This natural resin has been used medically for centuries in traditional Ayurveda; its name means “nectar of God”.
In India, it is believed that there is almost no curable disease that can’t be assisted with the consumption of Shilajit! For the sake of our topic, Shilajit is also know as a sexual enhancer since it helps to regulate sexual hormones, increases sperm count, increases physical strength and energy … tastes a little like cow pee, but for all its goodness, why not?

Asparagus

For centuries this green stem has been glorified for its aphrodisiac qualities. The Greeks spoke of it in love poetry and the Kama Sutra advised drinking it as a paste. It is said the French once dined on three meals of asparagus the day before their wedding in hopes of increasing their libido for the big night ahead! The canny lingam shaped stem is also packed with Calcium, Vitamin E and potassium, which apart from keeping the urinary tract and kidneys cleansed, also contribute to providing energy. Aspartic acid found in asparagus helps to neutralize excess ammonia in our bodies, which at high levels can cause fatigue and low sexual interest. So, worth a try?

Beetroot

Many cultures have considered beetroots an aphrodisiac. The Romans believed that beets promoted passionate feelings, whilst in Greek mythology Aphrodite ate beets to enhance her appeal. This folklore has some reality supporting the use of beetroots. Beets are a natural source of tryptophan and betaine, both substances that promote a feeling of well-being. They also contain high amounts of boron, a trace mineral that increases the level of sex hormones in the human body. Beetroots are also known to have a high source of nitric oxide, which improves blood flow to the sexual organs!
